Officer T. Norman had parked along Emancipation Highway across the street from Stratford Square Apartment Complex to complete some paperwork around 2 a.m., Fredericksburg police said. There were two Toyota Priuses parked side-by-side at the apartments. The city has seen a rash of catalytic converter thefts from that make of car, so Norman took note. Thieves steal the parts to sell the precious metals inside to scrap yards.

After a few moments, a Honda Civic pulled into the parking lot, and a man got out and moved toward the cars. When Officer Norman went to investigate, he heard sawing sounds from beneath one of the Priuses. He yelled for them to stop, but the man dashed back into the Honda and floored it, police said.

The chase was on. Fredericksburg officers, with the help of the Spotsylvania Sheriff's Office deputies, stopped the car at the Sunset Memorial Ceremony, police said.

Police arrested Maliq Burgess, 24, Jarell King, 28, and Jarell King, 28, all of Enfield, N.C. Officials charged them appropriately, police said. They were being held at the Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond, police added.
